One of the greatest challenges facing the animal advocacy movement is building a new generation of advocates who will strengthen and sustain the movement in the future. As vegan teachers with more than 15 years of experience, we are convinced that schools are one of the most important places to promote respect for animals by encouraging critical thinking and engaging students in animal advocacy.
According to the so-called “impressionable years hypothesis”, adolescence is the period when our values and attitudes are most likely to shape the decisions we will make as adults. This makes schools one of the most powerful settings to create lasting change for animals.
Teachers also have a powerful multiplier effect. By training teachers to integrate animal ethics into their teaching, a single educational intervention can influence hundreds of students throughout their careers.
Aimed at adolescents and with an educational purpose, the book The voice of animals invites reflection through critical thinking about different questions of animal ethics that arise when we think about the lives of animals, both in freedom and in captivity.
