    Teachers for an education based on respect for animals

    Aula Animal is an educational project that carries out initiatives and teaching proposals that promote respect for animals from childhood and during adolescence, with the school being a key space for the development of critical thinking.

    Values ​​education is present in educational curricula and laws. However, the protection and well-being of animals are rarely included among these values. We seldom reflect on the moral consideration we have for them, on how we relate to them, and how these relationships influence their lives, both positively and negatively, and our own. 

    Aware of this situation, a group of teachers from Aragon decided in 2011 to start this project in order to promote an education that also includes among its values ​​the idea that animals are individuals with interests that deserve to be respected in order to achieve a healthy coexistence. 

    Since then, we have been participating in awareness-raising activities in schools, as well as giving informative talks on how to educate with respect for animals, aimed at different social groups linked to education. Teacher training in the field of animal rights, as well as the sharing of proposals and activities, are our main objectives, in addition to serving as a meeting platform for those teachers with whom we share this same concern.

    The voice of animals

    Aimed at teenagers and with an educational purpose, the book The Voice of Animals invites reflection through critical thinking on different issues of animal ethics that arise when we think about the lives of animals, both in freedom and in captivity.

    Aula Animal is an anti-speciesist educational project that began its activity in 2011. After more than a decade of activism, a small group of secondary school teachers started this project with the aim of introducing education based on respect for animals in schools and institutes.. 

    Throughout these years our activities have reached hundreds of students and teachers in Spain and Latin America, and we have been fortunate to collaborate and work together with other teachers interested in animal issues, as well as with other animal welfare organizations..

    In our educational activities we use three fundamental pillars:

    • The use of the philosophical question: the philosophical question aims to make students think and reflect: “What animal do you think of when we talk about animal abuse?”, “Can you define what animal abuse is for you?”, “Do human beings cause harm to animals unnecessarily?”
