On May 8th, the ZOO XXI project was presented at La Pedrera in Barcelona, a revolutionary proposal of international scope for a progressive and complete reconversion of zoos as we know them today, with the aim of adapting them to the science and ethics of our century.
ZOOXXI propone un modelo de zoo más ciudadano, más científico, más educativo, más adecuado al territorio, y que promueva la empatía. 21 personalidades de Barcelona solicitan que la ciudad sea la primera en aplicar este proyecto ético que revoluciona el concepto de zoológico. Esta tarde se ha presentado en La Pedrera de Barcelona el proyecto ZOO XXI, una propuesta revolucionaria de alcance internacional para una progresiva y plena reconversión de los zoológicos tal como los conocemos hoy en día, con el objetivo de que se adapten a la ciencia y la ética de nuestro siglo.
The ZOOXXI project, designed by the animal rights association LIBERA! and the Franz Weber Foundation (FFW), is based on the idea that transforming zoos has become an urgent necessity and obligation: to include zoos in the advancements of animal rights. Furthermore, ZOOXXI considers the current zoo model and its profit-driven logic to be completely obsolete, as they are not in line with the level of scientific knowledge, ethics, or the environmental needs of our time. Among the main parameters of the zoo model promoted by the project are:
-To build a more citizen-oriented zoo: therefore, more transparent and participatory.
-To opt for a zoo more suited to our land: something that requires a gradual transformation of the current facilities to become a recovery center for native fauna at the expense of exotic animals.
-Advocate for a more scientific zoo: one that prioritizes conservation plans for endangered species with strategies to be developed in the natural habitats of each one.
-Plantear un zoo más educativo y que promueva la empatía: teniendo en cuenta el interés de los niños por lo interactivo, ZOOXXI aprovechará las nuevas tecnologías para enseñarles contenidos y conocimientos científicos. Asimismo, se promoverá que fijen su mirada tanto en las distintas especies de animales que los pequeños podrán ver en el zoo, como en cada individuo en particular, para fomentar una mayor empatía, respeto y consideración hacia todos los animales.
International presentation and Barcelona proposal
At the project launch, a technical roadmap was proposed so that all zoos worldwide wishing to stay ahead of the curve can access this program, which will facilitate their transition into 21st-century zoos. Secondly, the event also saw the presentation of the local ZOOXXI campaign platform, comprised of 21 prominent figures from Barcelona who have requested that the Catalan capital be the first to implement the ZOOXXI program, thus maintaining its position as a global leader in animal protection, rights, and innovation.
The Platform's representatives who participated in the presentation included musician Gerard Quintana, actress Mónica Pérez, lawyer Magda Oranich, and a dozen academics who worked on developing the program. The proposal also has the support and guidance of Carme Maté, former director of the Barcelona Zoo, and Jordi Portabella, former president of the park. Among those attending the event, hosted by ZOOXXI campaign spokesperson Leonardo Anselmi and journalist Daniel Domenjó, were representatives from consulates and delegations from various countries, international media outlets (from Argentina, Colombia, Switzerland, etc.), elected officials from the Barcelona City Council, Catalan members of parliament, and members of parliament and senators belonging to the APDDA (Parliamentary Association for the Defense of Animal Rights), among hundreds of people who filled the La Pedrera Auditorium to capacity.
