From Aula Animal we congratulate the people who have brought this initiative forward, the platform "For an education free from animal abuse".
A group of teachers from La Rioja have taken the initiative to join together to create a Platform of educators who will work "to prevent education that involves animal abuse."
En concreto, las ocho fundadoras de la Plataforma muestran su “rechazo al fomento que se practica desde el Ayuntamiento de Logroño para introducir a menores en el mundo la tauromaquia”.
As they state, "through bullfighting courses aimed at children during these San Mateo festivities in El Espolón, the City Council is indirectly encouraging our children to lose their feelings and compassion towards the suffering of beings capable of feeling."
"Seeing adults who do not react to the suffering of an animal and remain emotionally impassive, even celebrating when its life is taken away, is something that a child, and even adults, cannot understand: why that is right and why doing the same with another animal, such as a dog or a cat, is not," they argue.
As Laura, one of the founders, states, "the UR teaches the course 'Law, bullfighting and society' and to encourage young people to attend the bullring they are given a significant discount on their tickets, another regrettable attempt to prolong the extinction of a cruel tradition that no longer has a place in our society."
The teachers commented that "now with all the cuts we are experiencing in public education, healthcare…etc. it is immoral to dedicate time and money to something as unethical, useless and educational as bullfighting."
In his opinion, "subsidies intended for animal abuse could be diverted to animal shelters, refuges and sanctuaries, which do commendable work that is little recognized in society; that is, if money is given, it should be given to meet the basic needs of beings that suffer and not to promote their torture and death."
"The 'Platform for an Education Free from Animal Abuse' initiative is a great opportunity to speak on behalf of all educators and parents who strive to instill values of respect for others and respect for life. We must evolve as human beings and leave behind these outdated and cruel methods of entertainment," they conclude.
