Last year, a teacher at the Animal Classroom learned that a group of his 8th-grade students had been throwing stones at sparrow nests. He decided to speak with the technology teacher, and during cultural week, they held a workshop with the students on building birdhouses. This activity helps develop empathy towards animals and shows students that helping animals is more rewarding than mistreating them.

Building a cork house is very easy and cheap, and it takes very little time to assemble.
Materials needed: una plancha de corcho, un palillo chino, alambre y pegamento.
1._ Haz unas plantillas de papel siguiendo el esquema y pasa los dibujos al corcho.
2._ Recorta las caras de la casita. Los huecos para las pestañas se cortan mejor con cúter: pide ayuda a un adulto.
3._Haz un “bucle” con el alambre, introdúcelo en el tejado. Separa los extremos del alambre y pégalos.
4._ Arma la casita. Introduce un trozo del palillo chino para que los pájaros se puedan colocar sobre él.
When placing your birdhouse, remember to look for locations inaccessible to large animals that might frighten the birds. Also, choose quiet areas where the birdhouse is sheltered from strong winds and frost.
And, if you want to decorate it, keep in mind that you shouldn't use toxic paints for that.
