After hearing some clearly homophobic comments in a Natural Sciences class in the first year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education), in which a student stated that he did not like homosexuals "because their behavior is unnatural and they choose to deny the sex that God has given them," the teacher explained to him that homosexuality is absolutely common in nature and that what is unnatural is renouncing sex, as priests do.
The teacher decided to ask this student and others to do a project on different sexual orientations in the animal world. The project aimed to foster respect for homosexual people, but also sought to help students better understand animals, appreciate them as individuals, and move away from the view of them as "irrational machines guided solely by instinct"—a view still perpetuated in textbooks.
