Following the news circulating in several Spanish media outlets about a girl 'supposedly' raised on a vegan diet ending up in the ICU, the vegan families of the Facebook group BLW – Vegan / Vegetarian / Others – wish to express the following: • Veganism is not a diet. It is a dietary approach and a way of life, based on a series of convictions regarding nutrition, ethics, the environment, and religion. • Following a vegan diet will not land someone in the emergency room. Following any dietary approach without proper knowledge or professional guidance will. • More attention needs to be paid to infant nutrition in Spain, and not just to families following different dietary guidelines. These families are usually more informed about nutrition. • The pediatric association should update its guidelines and include different dietary options to accommodate the diversity of families. Ideally, they should also be able to recommend nutrition professionals if they themselves are not specifically trained in nutrition.
