Dear readers: My name is Izarbe Lechón Martínez, and I am 13 years old. I would like you to pay attention to this letter because it concerns me. There is a colony of approximately 15 cats at the Roman Theatre of Zaragoza, and they want to get rid of them. I want to say that I am completely against this, since these cats have not caused any property damage or hygiene problems. They have been neutered since 2014, and there are people who feed them and clean up after them.
As the Councillor for Public Services, Alberto Cubero, recently stated, these cats should not be evicted, in response to a question from the People's Party (PP). They are being subjected to harassment fueled by a media campaign against them. There is no substantiated evidence that they have caused ANY kind of damage. Those responsible for the CES (Trap-Neuter-Return) program have determined that there is no damage to the ruins, as they offered to provide litter boxes at their own expense, which the cats refused. It should also be emphasized that the cats are beneficial, as they prevent rodents and birds from damaging the ruins and disturbing tourists.
I urge the current Zaragoza government to commit to maintaining this colony in its habitat and allow those responsible for the CES project to continue caring for it and taking the necessary measures to ensure it does not cause any disturbance. I also request that the opinions of other archaeologists who have worked at the Roman Theatre and were in favor of the colony remaining, as well as recent reports from the Veterinary University of Zaragoza, be taken into account.
