With the typical excitement of every January 5th, the youngest children watched yesterday as a procession of over a hundred geese "guided" Their Majesties the Three Kings. What these children, at their age, failed to grasp was that these animals, rather than parading, were running in terror through the streets of Zaragoza, agitated by the festive commotion and frightened by being forced into a hostile environment far removed from their natural habitat.
While the Zaragoza City Council is currently debating legislation that promotes respect for animals—hopefully including a ban on circuses with animals—these same people are forgetting their animal rights principles by treating animals as mere objects of entertainment, just as they have done these past few days with donkeys and camels in the Plaza del Pilar. Wasn't that another kind of animal circus?
The education we must transmit to children must be based on respect for animals, making them understand that it is not right to have fun at the expense of the pain of others or to use them as we please.
