Zaragoza, August 29, 2012. Varios profesores de Aula Animal han participado hoy en una sesión sobre respeto a los animales en el Centro Penitenciario de Zuera (Zaragoza). El objetivo de la sesión ha sido exponer a los internos la discriminación que padecen los animales, además de promover una reflexión sobre un tema con el que rara vez habían entrado en contacto.
At Aula Animal, we believe that education is essential for achieving social change, and that such change can only occur if the largest possible number of people are informed and made aware. Therefore, after being invited by the Red Cross—with the consent of the prison—we couldn't pass up this opportunity.
Our mission in these conferences is to highlight the plight of animals and question the treatment they receive through education. However, it's not easy to deliver a message when the attendees have such diverse personal histories, are incarcerated, and have very limited capacity for personal change and action to help animals at the time they are listening to the talk.
However, after more than an hour and a half meeting with the fifty-three attendees, the feeling was very positive. None of them knew the word "veganism," and few had stopped to think about the treatment animals receive due to the education they have received from the society in which we live. Several of them even expressed interest in helping animals once they finish their sentences, and, most importantly, they were able to learn a different way of seeing animals.
