Today, March 18, 2013, we gave two talks at the IES Miguel Catalán, invited by a teacher from the Philosophy department.
Both groups were from the first year of high school. The discussion focused on how we are taught that animals are guided solely by instinct, distancing them from the concept of "someone" and bringing them closer to the concept of "something." However, the objective study of their behavior through ethology indicates the opposite. Examples used included tool use, self-awareness, animal culture, and language use.
It has also been pointed out that even if it were true that non-human animals are guided solely by instincts, that would not justify their exploitation.
